Gunnar faces John Hathaway at UFC 189
Gunnar Nelson will face John Hathaway at UFC 189, biggest card of the year that will take place July 11 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.
Nelson vs. Hathaway joins an already interesting card that includes Gunnar's team mate Conor McGregor who will face the featherweight champion Jose Aldo in the main event and welterweight titleholder Robbie Lawler vs. Rory MacDonald in the co-main. So two titles on the line this weekend.
Both Gunnar and John are coming back after headlining cards in 2014 where both lost. Gunnar came short on the judges scorecards in Sweden via split decision to Rick Story in October, that was Gunnar's first MMA loss. Hathaway lost to Dong Hyun Kim in China in March 2014 via a spinning-back-elbow KO. That was his second ever loss but the English fighter won seven of his first eight UFC fights – the lone loss coming via decision to Mike Pyle.
This will be Gunnar's first fight in the U.S. but he won his first four UFC fights and already earned a pair of “Performance of the Night” bonuses.
