Great win for Gunnar in his UFC debut
Gunnar Nelson defeated the American DaMarques Johnson in the 1st round by submission (RNC) at UFC on Fuel TV 5 in Nottingham, England, last Saturday night. This was Gunnar's debut in the UFC. DaMarques came in much bigger than Gunnar who hardly had to cut any weight for this catch weight bout a 175. Gunnar weighed in at 175 as agreed but DaMarques however weighed in at 183, missing the cache weight by 8 pounds. This is the biggest weight difference in the history of welterweight in the UFC.
Gunnar got some very warm welcoming from the crowd in Nottingham, both from the English fans and the massive Icelandic group that came over to support him. In the first seconds Gunnar flicked a high kick at Johnson's head who was obivously pretty surprised by the kick. Gunnar then landed both a body kick and leg kick before closing the distance and taking the fight to the ground. Gunnar worked from half-guard but Johnson managed to kick of that fence catches him in an omoplata for few seconds but Gunnar easily rolled out of that and into side control after landing few blows to DaMarques and then passing his guard. Gunnar then got the full mount forcing Johnson to give up his back. From there Gunnar worked for the RNC, getting it after setting up a body triangle and lending some blows. Gunnar gets the submission win in his UFC debut, tapping DaMarques Johnson out with a RNC 3:34 into the first round.
