Good victory over Michael Russell
Around two thousands spectators were at Iceland’s biggest arena Saturday night when two of Europe’s youngest BJJ black belts clashed in a No-Gi grappling match under ADCC rules (-77kg weight class). Gunnar Nelson (22) met England’s greatest grappling talent Michael Russell (26) in a bout that was the highlight of Iceland Health and Fitness Expo held over the weekend, featuring both 4 times Mr. Olympia Jay Cutler and Monica Brant in a bodybuilding, the strong man contest and many other events in the arena Saturday night.
The bout between Gunnar and Michael was the final event and Gunnar got some great support from the Icelandic crowd but Michael Russell is the most decorated foreign grappler to compete in Iceland. So there was much excitement for this fight and great atmosphere in the arena when Gunnar and Michael finally clashed. Gunnar got Michael down in the first seconds of the fight but Michael showed some great guard defence. But Gunnar slowly but surely won his way pass his opponents guard, took Michael’s back and choked him into submission 4 minutes into the match. Great win for Gunnar against a very tough and talented opponent.
